Our daughter, Kylie, was born perfectly normal, full of joy and expectations. When she was sixteen months old her life changed as a result of a 30-second shake at the hands of a live-in nanny. Kylie was near dead, vegetative and unable to walk, talk, eat, see, sit up or do any of the things she had begun to do. Over time some of her functions returned. Her sight and cognition were restored, but her motor and verbal skills did not and her functioning abilities had left her in a wheelchair. Hope came when we learned about Conductive Education. We drove from Fountain Hills, Arizona for an assessment and were told that we did have reason to hope. For the first time in three years, the lead conductor had her sitting up in a chair at a plinth table. We knew immediately where she needed to be. Our family temporarily relocated to San Jose and lived in the SV Holiday Inn while Kylie attends the CE Center six hours a day, five days a week. She went from sitting alone on a stool in five weeks, to standing alone holding onto a ladder, to feeding herself, pottying in a potty, speaking words and then initiating steps on her own! We love the respect and dignity that the Conductors give each child. They believe and hope right along with you and the children know it. Sometimes we peek in during the class and see the smiles and kisses. The Conductors have restored the joy of the children. Our daughter was blessed the day she began Beginning Steps To Independence, Inc. She smiles all day and is happy in her accomplishments but never seems tired or worn out. The last five months have made more difference in Kylie's life that the previous three years of various therapies and programs. Conductive Education seeks to restore the full potential of every "special needs child". CE and Beginning Steps changed our Kylie from a wheelchair-bound-for-life person to a functioning person with hope for a significant future. Thank you Beginning Steps, Conductors and Aides. We will be forever grateful beyond words.
